Why the AI Lab?

We are all living through a real time unfolding of a technological revolution. Just as with past waves – the 1.0, the 2.0, and beyond – a new AI transformation is taking shape before our eyes. Whether we interact with the technology periodically, explore it at its fringes or cautiously standing on the sidelines, the impact it will have on society, and every one of us in the coming years, will be profound. It will reshape how we learn, work, travel, build, and live. We will feel its force in geopolitics, business, health, and even in our human relationships. It may also redefine the very way we practice foresight.

At the time of writing this, no-one really has the answers to the multitude of questions this accelerating transformation raises every day. This is a good time to be explorative, bold and curious.

What is the Lab?

The H3 AI Lab is a long-term, collaborative experimentation space rooted in a Horizon 3 perspective. It is designed as a think-and-do tank where we explore the interplay between AI and foresight in order to reframe our perceptions of plausible future paths of people, societies, businesses and the established interconnections.

It is a place for challenging and redrawing our understanding of how long-term futures will be shaped by intelligent systems.

We prototype AI-native foresight tools and co-develop adaptive “liquid foresight” - an approach that is modular, AI-driven, and built on curiosity, co-creation, and strategic relevance - building on CIFS’ 50+ years of explorative, structured and futures-oriented thinking.

Who is behind it?

The lab is led by Senior Futurists Bugge Holm Hansen and Sofie Hvitved along with our CEO Daria Krivonos.

What kind of projects live in the Lab?

  • Exploring Horizon 3 AI futures across institutions, sectors, organisations, and cultures, focusing our attention on the potential long-term outcomes of current disruptions
  • Testing innovative foresight and AI tools that complement existing standard foresight models, such as:
*Prototyping AI-native foresight tools such as agentic dashboards, simulations, and future swarm tools
    * Co-creating sandbox formats, including AI-mediated scenario cycles and augmented foresight sprints
  • Co-creating with partners in sandbox formats, including AI-mediated scenario cycles and generative foresight sprints
  • Developing methodological provocations that challenge established foresight practices in an AI-driven world

H3 AI Lab Dogmas

  • We explore the fringes, venturing into uncharted spaces where AI and futures thinking merge.
  • We aim to prepare for the unknown; building readiness for futures that differ radically from today.
  • We challenge the comfortable and established, questioning assumptions and making space for imagining the improbable and the provocative.
  • We create with curiosity and care; pairing bold exploration with responsibility, grounded in CIFS’ 50+ years of futures practice in which we embrace plurality, exploring many futures, from the probable to the provocative.
  • We experiment with form and method; prototyping ideas, tools, and scenarios that reimagine what can be possible when combining AI and foresight.
  • We connect human imagination and machine intelligence, expanding the boundaries of foresight.
  • We use uncertainty as a resource, treating the unknown as fertile ground for innovation and transformation.

Why does it matter?

AI is not only influencing what the future might look like - it is increasingly transforming the very ways in which we imagine, conceptualise, and work with futures. As AI accelerates disruption across sectors and systems, traditional foresight frameworks will too experience the change.

The H3 AI Lab offers an environment to push the boundaries of current imagination, engage with futures thinking, explore new foresight methods, and debate possible futures in connection to AI. It is a space not only to build scenarios - but to playfully explore how the future can be sensed, re-perceived and co-created in radically new ways with AI.

It’s not about making foresight more efficient. It is about rethinking its relevance in an AI-augmented future where decision-making itself may be very different from today. Exploring if it can become even more imaginative, adaptive, and alive.

Who is it for?

The H3 AI Lab is for visionary organisations across various sectors and for individuals in different areas of expertise who sense that transformation is coming - and want to actively work with it, not just react to its eventual arrival.

The Lab positions participants to actively shape the long-term evolution of foresight practice in an AI-mediated context, moving beyond incremental shifts to enable deeper, transformative exploration. The lab is also for foresight professionals who seek to expand their field by engaging with AI in experimental ways that can expose glimpses of how we may be doing foresight in the future.

What kind of projects live in the Lab?

The Lab explores projects that involves AI and stretches beyond the scope of traditional foresight.

Examples include:

  • Exploring H3 AI futures across institutions, sectors, organisations, and cultures
  • Prototyping AI-native foresight tools such as agentic dashboards, simulations, or future swarm tools
  • Co-creating with partners in sandbox formats, including AI-mediated scenario cycles and generative foresight sprints
  • Testing ideas that doesn’t fit into conventional delivery models
  • Developing methodological provocations that may challenge the traditional foresight methodologies in an AI-mediated world
