About the Project
The Danish library sector has developed a shared vision for how libraries can navigate and thrive in a future shaped by artificial intelligence. The initiative brings together voices from across the sector to address the opportunities and challenges posed by rapid technological change, ensuring that libraries remain central to an informed and empowered society. The ambition behind the vision was to position libraries not merely as passive service providers, but as active shapers of the digital future - institutions that champion citizens’ digital literacy, strengthen their own technological capacity, and contribute meaningfully to the national conversation on AI.
At the heart of the vision are four guiding ambitions that serve as common reference points for the entire sector. These are not prescriptive rules for individual libraries, but shared benchmarks intended to spark strategic dialogue both within the sector and with external stakeholders:
Citizens’ Digital Literacy – empowering individuals to navigate and critically engage with digital technologies.
Libraries’ Understanding of Technology – building institutional capacity to adopt and evaluate emerging tools.
The Digital Foundation of Libraries – ensuring robust, future-ready digital infrastructure.
A National Conversation – contributing expertise and perspective to public debate on AI and society.
By articulating this vision, the Danish library sector signals its readiness to embrace the possibilities of AI while safeguarding its mission as a trusted, inclusive, and forward-looking public institution
